Switching from Aperture to Lightroom

So pleased to have made the switch from Aperture to Lightroom. The main reason for doing this was that I wanted a proper archival solution for all my images. Aperture simply does not offer that ability to search for 1 image amongst 100,000. This was also confirmed to me by one of the Aperture technical support staff in the States. I would compare Lightroom’s archival structure to the way my old Fotostaion  program worked in terms of utilising folders.

The Develop Module is great and the ability to be able to edit from Lightroom into Photoshop is another reason for changing over. My first processed images done in Lightroom 4.3 are of Jacaranda trees in a residential street in Kirribilli, North Sydney. I have added these images to my stock photography archive.

Although I am still finding my way around Lightroom and will do some more reviews on it, there is one piece of information that has to be mentioned. Its in reference to saving space on your internal hard drive. Most Lightroom users know that the Lightroom 4 catalog previews file takes up a bit of space on the internal hard drive after a while. I could not find any information online as to what to do with the catalog previews file in terms of removing it to save space on the internal drive. I ended up speaking to Adobe technical support about this matter. They advised me that the catalog previews file works in conjunction with the catalog. I noticed my catalog previews file was gradually increasing in size and was up to 2.4 GB of space used on my macbook pro. Adobe advised me not to move the catalog previews file on its own but in conjunction with the catalog as well. So there solution of saving space while running Lighroom is to move the catolog previews file and the catalog file onto an external drive. This would mean totally relying on an external drive every time I wanted to work in Lightroom on my macbook pro. Not ideal! The only answer I could find about saving space on my macbook pro when using Lightroom was to delete some of the older backups.
