I first started out as a photographer in London shooting black and white 35mm film for various newspapers, magazines and PR companies as a freelancer.
Black and White photography evokes a timeless and classic atmosphere in a scene and I felt that there was no better place than the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney to illustrate this.
This heritage-listed building was constructed in the late 19th century and stands as a testament to Victorian-era design and craftsmanship. Its intricate details, ornate facades, and grand interiors exude a sense of history and nostalgia.
Capturing the QVB’s Great Australian Clock, hanging at the northern end of the building with the ceiling arches above and intricate marble floor patterns below was the perfect composition.
On this occasion I had to lean right over the balcony to capture this image, a tripod would not have worked.
The contrast between light and shadow was accentuated in black and white, by the large skylights and grand atrium, as well as the overall architectural details.
