Description
One late afternoon, I noticed a beautiful array of clouds forming, promising the potential for another stunning sunset photo. I decided that Milk Beach, located in the affluent suburb of Vaucluse on Sydney’s eastern side, would be the perfect spot. This tranquil and secluded beach along Sydney Harbour is a hidden gem, often overlooked by tourists.
My choice of location was also deeply personal; my family celebrated New Year’s Eve 2000 at Strickland House, a heritage-listed mansion opposite Milk Beach. I fondly remember welcoming the millennium with breathtaking views of the Sydney Harbour Fireworks while calling my late father in the UK to wish him a happy New Year. It was undoubtedly one of the best places to ring in the new millennium.
For me, capturing a scene always requires a meaningful connection. I constantly ponder what significance lies behind each photograph.
Upon arriving at Milk Beach, I took my time to find the perfect setting. I quickly spotted a few people sitting on the rocks, admiring the stunning views, with a yacht in the foreground and the iconic Harbour Bridge in the background. With the sunset approaching, it seemed like a perfect composition, but the lighting posed a challenge as I was shooting into the light, resulting in lens flare.
Out of the ten photos I took, one stood out and changed my perspective on shooting into the light. The lens flare unexpectedly added a creative touch, enhancing the scene with the yacht in the foreground and the silhouettes of people enjoying the view, bringing the photo to life.
