I photographed an art installation of 50 hanging cages, titled “Forgotten Songs” in Sydney.
These hanging cages are suspended in mid-air surrounded by art-deco buildings in a narrow laneway in the heart of Sydney’s CBD. They commemorate the songs of fifty birds once heard in central Sydney, before they were forced out by European settlement.
I am featuring two of my favourite photographs and what appealed to me about taking them.
The couple in almost a silhouette walking down the laneway holding hands firstly added a romantic feel to the scene. I also felt that the setting with the art- deco buildings and the narrow laneway could have been anywhere in Europe.
Then there just happened to be two window cleaners suspended above the birdcages in the background cleaning some offices. I liked the contrast of every day life going on surrounded by the hanging cages which appeared much bigger than they actually were and it gave a different perspective to the scene. No doubt this is one of Sydney’s more hidden tourist destinations to visit.
